Members of the Sri Lankan team are affiliated to the Horticultural Crop Research and Development Institute (Dr. H.H. Fonseka, and Ms. N. Perera,) and to the University of Peradeniya (Dr. R. Fonseka, and Dr. R.H.G. Ranil). The team leader will be Dr. H. Hemal Fonseka, who is vegetable breeder working at Horticultural Crop Research and Development Institute (Gannoruwa, Sri Lanka). Dr. Fonseka holds a PhD from Ehime University (Japan), an MSc from Kagawa University (Japan) and an MSc from the State University of Ghent (Belgium). He has served as Senior Program Specialist for 3 years at SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) Agriculture Center, in Dhaka, Bangladesh which coordinates the agriculture related activities in 8 South Asian countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka). Presently, he serves as a member of SAARC Governing Board. The group has long experience in eggplant breeding, including participatory breeding, characterization, evaluation of diversity, hybridization, and have developed some eggplant varieties adapted to the local conditions.
